A 24-BORE PERCUSSION SILVER-MOUNTED HOLSTER PISTOL SIGNED BENNETT, LONDON, no visible serial number,
bearing hallmarks for London 1796, converted from flint, with slightly swamped 9in. octagonal barrel, the top-flat signed 'BENNETT, ROYAL EXCHANGE, LONDON', white metal fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight, engraved top-tang, later bolstered nipple, the bevel-edged lock signed 'BENNETT' and retaining vestiges of its original pan cut-out and blanked off pin-holes, engraved hammer with bolted safe behind (safe frozen), walnut full-stock with chequered grip and full silver mounts including swollen long side-spurred butt-cap, trigger guard bow (repaired) and tang, pierced ribbon side-plate, ramrod thimbles, throat and twin barrel key escutcheons, including its original silver-tipped ramrod with iron worm
Provenance: Over 20 gunmakers with the name Bennett operated in London between 1705-1860, but this pistol is almost certainly the work of John (2), who apprenticed to his father John (1) in 1758 becoming master in 1773 and again in 1793. His father was also a renowned silver sword-hilt maker and his hallmark often appears on guns made by his son. Sadly, he was gazetted bankrupt in 1797 but succeeded by his wife, Elizabeth, who carried on the business till 1809 before merging with Lacy to form Bennett and Lacy
