A FINE 18-BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER-PISTOL, no visible serial number,
circa 1715, with swamped triple-stage 12in. barrel, the muzzle chiselled with acanthus foliage, silver grotesque-mask fore-sight, the breech section chiselled with symmetrical relief foliate scrolls, some with monster-head terminals, the punched background featuring a brass satyr's mask and foliage, the rear with a Utrecht mark and carved foliage inlaid with brass, tang with acanthus carving in relief and a profiled classical bust, slightly curved, flat border engraved bevel-edged lock with pointed tail, signed behind the hammer 'PENTERMAN, UTRECHT' and engraved with a figure of Justice seated on a cannon, the tail engraved with a Romanesque bust within an oval, faceted hammer jaws, pan and frizzen (top jaw and screw expertly replaced), lightly carved figured walnut full-stock (fore-end cracked) with cast and chased brass furniture, foliate engraved bulbous butt-cap with long ears and extended engraved spurs, pierced sideplate with two monsters-heads and a grotesque mask inhabiting foliage, engraved trigger-guard with foliate finial, vacant pierced escutcheon above a grotesque mask at wrist, moulded ramrod thimbles and original brass-tipped wood ramrod
