A .450 (3 1/4IN.) BLACK POWDER EXPRESS ROTARY-UNDERLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED HAMMER RIFLE, serial no. 25273,
28in. black powder only barrels, raised matt-rib with banner engraved 'E.M. REILLY & CO., 502, NEW OXFORD ST. LONDON', with open sights and five folding leaf sights, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards, bead fore-sight, Jones patent rotary-underlever, carved percussion fences, non-rebounding back-action locks, border engraving, retaining much original colour-hardening overall, 14 3/8in. figured pistolgrip stock with Royal household inventory label, horn pistolgrip-cap, steel sling eyes and buttplate, weight 8lb. 11oz.
Provenance: This rifle formed part of a collection of firearms belonging to the Late King Alfonso XIII of Spain. The inventory label on the stock identifies the rifle as being stock number 1744 and is dated 1961 (presumably the date of its acquisition by the Royal Household).
King Alfonso XIII (17th May 1886 - 28th February 1941) ascended to the throne of Spain at his birth, his Father, Alfonso XII having died the previous November. In May 1906 he married Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg (granddaughter of Queen Victoria). Following continued political and social unrest which had led to Spain being declared a Republic and Civil War breaking out, he finally abdicated his rights to the Spanish throne in January 1941, just one month before his death.
Throughout his life, he was a keen shooting man, an accomplished live pigeon and game shot who dedicated much of his time in pursuance of the sport throughout Europe. He was a great patron to many European gunmakers - and also to several Spanish football teams, his second great passion in life.
