A SCARCE .400 PERCUSSION MATCH-RIFLE, serial no. 281,
circa 1847, with heavy two-stage 35 1/2in. barrel, the muzzle drilled in the face for a ball-starter (missing), dove-tailed boat-shaped fore-sight, cut dove-tail for rear-sight (missing), the left-hand top-flat stamped 'E. WESSON NORTHBORO. MASS' together with an eagle trade-mark, the wording 'CAST STEEL' and the serial number, the breech-block engraved with bands and floral detail to the corners (traces of colour), borderline and sparse scroll engraved long top-tang drilled and fitted with a micro adjustable peep-sight (probably later), borderline and scroll engraved back-action lock signed 'E. Wesson' on a checker-board background (traces of colour), American walnut straight-hand half-stock, later oval vacant brass plaque to left hand side of butt, engraved nickel crescent heel-plate, double-spurred nickel trigger-guard bow and tang, double-set triggers, white-metal fore-end cap and no provision for ramrod
