A FINE AND RARE GARNITURE OF THREE SMALL-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED PARK-RIFLES, serial no's. 3300, 3848 & 4923,
The first made 1840 and of 60-bore, with multi-groove rifled 26in. browned damascus barrels, the broad sighting rib signed ' J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON' (rubbed), bead-blade fore-sight, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight, acanthus scroll engraving and single platinum line at breech, fully scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY', scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammers with sliding safes, highly figured chequered walnut half-stock with raised tear-drop cheek-piece, scroll engraved iron furniture including the heel-plate face, chequered pistol-grip spur to the trigger-guard tang, double triggers and period brass mounted mahogany ramrod numbered '3303'; The second made 1843 and of 40-bore, with multi-groove rifled 27in. browned damascus barrels, the broad sighting rib signed ' J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON', bead-blade fore-sight, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight with additional folding leaf, acanthus scroll engraving and single platinum line at breech, fully scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY', scroll engraved drum-based dolphin-headed hammers with sliding safes, chequered walnut half-stock with raised tear-drop cheek-piece, scroll engraved iron furniture including the heel-plate face and hinged iron patch-box, chequered pistol-grip spur to the trigger-guard tang, double triggers and period brass mounted matching number mahogany ramrod (much colour and finish remaining throughout); The last made 1854 and of 32-bore, rifled with the newly introduced 'Purdey's two-groove' system, 30 1/2in. browned damascus barrels, the broad sighting rib signed ' J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON', bead-blade fore-sight, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight with four additional folding leaves, scroll engraving and single platinum line at breech, engraved platinum plugs, fully scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY', drum based scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammers with sliding safes, chequered walnut half-stock with raised tear-drop cheek-piece, scroll engraved iron furniture including hinged iron patch-box, the heel-plate with chequered face, chequered pistol-grip spur to the trigger-guard tang, double triggers and period brass mounted mahogany numbered ramrod, the whole also retaining much original finish and colour
Other Notes: This rare garniture of park rifles were manufactured for the father of Cecil George Savile Foljambe, 1st Earl of Liverpool (7 November 1846 – 23 March 1907), also known as The Lord Hawkesbury between 1893 and 1905. Foljambe was a British Liberal politician and a great-nephew of Prime Minister Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool. Foljambe was also Lord Steward of the Household under Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman between 1905 and his death in 1907.
