Product Details

MAYER & GRAMMELSPACHER, GERMANY
A RARE .177 BREAK-BARREL AIR-RIFLE FOR RESTORATION, MODEL 'MGR FIRST MODEL', serial no. 1798,
only produced between 1901-05, with octagonal 18 3/4in. smoothbore barrel, dove-tailed fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight (dove-tail bruised), complex cast air-chamber with barrel locking catch mounted near front on the left hand side, walnut straight-hand butt-stock (cracks and small losses at head), the left hand side of butt bearing a small retailers escutcheon 'ROBERTS GUNMAKER STEELHOUSE LANE, BIRMINGHAM', iron heel-plate and no provision for fore-end (some screws replaced or lacking, well worthy of restoration)

Provenance: This rifle was the first air-rifle produced by the newly formed partnership of Jakob Mayer and Josef Grammelspacher. They had produced a number of successful air pistol designs starting in 1890, but the production of rifles did not start until 1901. Initially all models were trademarked 'MGR', with the early mark being the first two letters over the last (as this example) but soon had a smiling boy's face and target incorporated into the design. However, as their factory in Rastatt, Germany was known as 'Dianawerk', the name 'Diana' was adopted for all models and quickly became one of the most famous marques of airgun ever to have been produced.
