Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed on the 22nd July, 1889 for the Hon. F.J. Moncreiff.
Hon. Francis James Moncreiff (1849 - 1900) was the second son of James Moncreiff, 1st Baron Moncreiff of Tulliebole. He attended Edinburgh Academy and played club rugby for Edinburgh Academicals. He was one of the first two captains in International Rugby, having been selected to captain Scotland in the world's first international Rugby Union game, played against England. Hon. Francis Moncreiff is pictured standing, far right in Scotland's first team photograph, reproduced above. Photograph kindly supplied by the Edinburgh Academicals Club
In December 1870 a letter appeared in the pages of The Scotsman and Bell's Life, a London magazine inviting footballers "selected from the whole of England" to participate in a 20-a-side game to be played under the Rugby rules. The match was played at Raeburn Place on the 27th March 1871, a Monday. The English team had a hard night's travel the previous day on bare board seats in third-class carriages, the journey told against them (Incidentally, the English all paid their own expenses in full) and Scotland won the match by scoring two tries and a goal to England's single try. England got their revenge a year later by winning the return match at the Kennington Oval.
Hon. Francis Moncreiff went on to win three international Caps for Scotland, each as captain.
