A SCARCE .577 (OVAL BORE) PERCUSSION MUSKET, MODEL 'PATTERN 1855 SAPPERS & MINERS CARBINE', no visible serial number,
dated for '1859', with re-blued 31 1/2in. barrel signed near breech 'LANCASTER'S PATENT' (faint), block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, ordnance stamps at breech, borderline engraved signed and dated lock with a 'V.R.' crown device at tail, walnut three-quarter stock with Board of Ordnance broad arrow mark to side of butt, the left stock cheek marked 'W. PROCTER', the underside behind trigger guard tang '52' and 'BECKWITH' behind rear swivel, two iron barrel-bands and iron jag-ended ramrod
Other Notes: Charles Lancaster supplied two batches of these guns, one in 1855 for 2842 pieces and the other for 472 pieces in 1856. The batch of 750 made in 1857 was shared between him and the London Gun Trade. The monopoly was completely broken in 1858 when orders were placed with only the London trade for a further 1068 and then the Birmingham trade for another 2132.. By 1860 the majority of parts were being made in Birmingham with the London trade only 'setting up' rifles from the already manufactured parts
