A 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 16885,
for 1900, 27in. sleeved nitro reproved barrels (sleeved in in 1973, nitro reproved in 2026), rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/2 choke, toplever engraved '1', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, removable striker discs, arrow cocking-indicators, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, brushed bright and reblued finish, action bar squeezed, 14 5/8in. figured replacement stock, weight 6lb. 7oz., in a brass-cornered oak and leather case
Provenance: The makers have kindly supplied the vendor with a copy of the original entry in their records, together with an extensive letter detailing the history of the gun as shown in their records. Both documents are supplied with the gun mounted in a glazed frame:
The gun was completed on the 5th June 1900 for a C.H. Benton with 29in. Whitworth-steel barrels and put together by C. Wilkes.
In the makers notes, they record the following:
"Mr Benton is noted as having 'shot well at ground but rather high and to R(ight)'. He appears to have been accompanied by Mr. Cecil Purdey, who was the junior partner at the time
30th August 1900: the stock bend was reduced by 1/8in.
30th January 1901: An estimate was given to make a new pair of guns, taking back his existing gun in part exchange. The balance would have been £115.15s.
14th July 1903: Gun no. 17854 was built to match
10th December 1913: Left barrel badly injured on the top side, 14 1/2in. from breech end. Repaired by us
May 1918: Mr Benton noted as deceased
4th December 1918: Both guns now property of Lt. M.P. Benton
26th January 1920: Both guns purchased back from Mr Benton. No. 16885 sold to C.G.L. Arnot on May 1920"
