Product Details

AN EARLY 25-BORE ENGLISH FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL, UNSIGNED, no visible serial number,
circa 1690, with multi-staged 12 3/4in. iron barrel transforming from octagonal to sixteen-sided to stepped round, carved bands at the intersections, no provision for sights, London proofs and maker's mark (possibly a badly struck 'I.H' for John Hosey), squared top-tang fixed from below, slightly curved scroll engraved and radiused lock with elongated tail, swan-necked cock, working replacement top-jaw and pan, unbridled frizzen with finialled spring, walnut full-stock with carved apron (repaired centrally on fore-end), iron furniture including heavy eared butt-cap and trigger guard with raised tangs, three dome-headed side-nails and iron faced wooden ramrod

Provenance: The maker's mark could be that of John Hosey who was apprenticed to John Price in 1678 and became free of the Gunmakers Company in 1678, becoming master of same in 1719. The mark appears to be two capital letter 'I's' with a fleur-de-lys over the second 'I'. The majority of maker's marks have a small device such as a crown or fleur-de-lys centrally above the initials, indicating that part of the second letter is probably absent
