A FINE .451 PERCUSSION DELUXE-GRADE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 883,
circa 1860, with heavy octagonal browned twist 33 1/2in. barrel with Henry rifling, the top-flat signed 'ALEXr. HENRY 8 SOUTH ST ANDREWS ST EDINBURGH' near the breech and 'PATENT NO. 427 GAUGE 451' forwards of the rear-sight, the front half of the top-flat cross-hatched and matted, broad dove-tailed bead fore-sight, rear-sight with four graduated folding leaves, each marked with the respective range and scroll engraved with a central platinum line, the breech-block with engraved bands, scrolls and featuring the mask of a lion to the top, engraved platinum plug, fully scroll engraved top-tang, borderline and scroll engraved bar-action lock (much colour remaining) signed 'ALEXr. HENRY' below the hammer and featuring engravings of a standing stag to the front and a prowling tiger to the tail, slab-sided fully scroll engraved moulded hammer with dolphin head and blued sliding safety to the fore, chequered full pistol-grip half-stock with scroll engraved iron patch-box to the right hand side of butt, the lid with an engraving of a stag fending off wolves, scroll engraved iron heel-plate (strong traces of original blued finish) with an engraving of a leopard to the short top-spur, gold shield-shaped vacant escutcheon to the underside of stock, moulded iron pistol-grip cap with scroll engraved central cap-box, scroll engraved trigger-guard tang, the bow with a further engraving of a tiger (much blued finish remaining inside the bow), single-set trigger, engraved pineapple finial, turned ramrod throat and plain thimbles and original mahogany ramrod with locking notch to the brass tip
