A CASED 54-BORE TRANTER PATENT FIVE-SHOT DOUBLE-ACTION PERCUSSION REVOLVER, serial no. 7151.T,
with 6in. octagonal sighted barrel engraved with a band of foliage at the muzzle, scrollwork in front of the top-strap and the initials 'H.M.V.' on the right barrel-flat, border and scroll engraved top-strap signed 'GARDEN & SON. 200. PICCADILLY. LONDON', border and scroll engraved cylinder, profusely scroll engraved frame (mechanism at fault), chequered walnut butt, border and scroll engraved butt-cap and trigger-guard, and border and scroll engraved rammer marked 'W. TRANTER'S PATENT', London proof marks, in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories including brass double-cavity bullet-mould serial numbered to the revolver, the lid with trade label of Robt. S. Garden, 29 Piccadilly, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon engraved 'H.M. VIBART / MADRAS ENGINEERS'.

Other Notes: Colonel Henry Meredith Vibart was commissioned into the Hon. East India Co. Engineers in 1857. Shortly after his arrival in India in 1859 he was appointed to the Public Works Dept working on irrigation and the military works at Kristina and Bangalore. He became Under Secretary of Irrigation in 1879 and Superintendent Engineer in 1889, retiring from the service in 1891. He published several books including the Military History of the Madras Engineers and Pioneers.
