9th century, with 29in pattern-welded 2in wide blade tapering to a spatulate tip, wide central 'herringbone' fuller with possible polished out inlaid inscription, the silver wire inlaid hilt with 'tea-cosy' pommel conforming to Petersen type 'H', Wheeler type 'II', 4in wide boat-shaped cross guard, the whole in excavated, cleaned condition but remaining in a remarkable state of preservation with the majority of the inlaid decoration intact
