A GOOD CASED 12-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-RIFLE FOR SMITH'S PATENT CAPS BY SAMUEL AND CHARLES SMITH, serial no. 5589,
circa 1845, with 28in. multi-faceted damascus multi-groove rifled barrels (cleaned of finish), the broad flat sighting rib with a dove-tailed fore-sight and a three folding one standing leaf rear-sight and signed 'SAM'L & C. SMITH, PRINCES STREET, LEICESTER SQR'E, LONDON.' together with a poincon bordered in platinum on a matt ground containing the words 'SMITH'S PATENT', colour-hardened breech ends fitted with 'Smiths Patent Imperial Nipples', platinum plugs, border-line and scroll engraved slightly curved locks signed 'SAM'L & C. SMITH, PRINCES ST. LONDON', hooked front fixings to the bars, scroll and dolphin engraved hammers with 'Smith's' patent removable noses, walnut half-stock, chequered at the wrist, silver rectangular escutcheon to top of wrist engraved with two fishes, iron long-spurred heel-plate with serial number and engraving, trigger-guard with shaped and engraved finial, engraved ram-rod throat, silver cross-bolt escutcheons, original ramrod and sling eyelets, together with its original walnut compartmented case lined in green baize (stained), with a full compliment of accessories including a 'Smith's' patent nipple remover, a numbered ball-mould, a brass bullet-mould, Hawksley leather covered bag-shaped powder flask with adjustable nozzle, a spring clamp and wad-punch, original parchment trade label to the inside of lid and a ring handle to the outside (exterior of case lightly distressed)
