Provenance: We have been kindly supplied the following information by the vendor:

"This pair of guns were made for Sir Robert Jones (1857-1933) in the 1920's. He is generally considered to be the father of British orthopaedic surgery. A Welshman, he honed his orthopaedic skills as Surgeon-Superintendent to the builders of the Manchester Ship Canal who were responsible for many thousands of fractures among the workers. He was the first surgeon in 1897 to employ Xrays, publishing the first one in the Lancet in 1897. In WW1 he was appointed Inspector of Military Orthopaedics having responsibility for over 20,000 beds, including those at the Hammersmith Hospital, Duncane Road, then a purely military orthopaedic hospital. He was created baronet in 1920. He is commemorated in The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. On his death the guns were left to Arthur Bell, with whom he shot regularly and whom was later knighted as President of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. They came to the present owner by descent."
