A SCARCE .303 SINGLE-BARRELLED TOPLEVER 'LONG LOCKPLATE' HAMMER RIFLE, serial no. 19518,
circa 1894, 28in. black powder proof barrel of ovate form with a partially file-cut top flat, engraved to the centre 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. WINNERS OF ALL THE "FIELD" RIFLE TRIALS 1883', open sights with two folding leaf sights, marked for 100, 200 and 300 yards, ramped bead fore-sight, the right side towards breech stamped with a registration number 'M6763', long bar action with carved percussion fence to the left and reverse teardrop fence to the right, removable striker bar, elongated top-strap, left hand rebounding 'long lock' running the full length of the pistolgrip with front-bolted faceted hammer, the right side with matching long sideplate, border engraving, the lockplate and sideplate engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND' and with floral motifs to and around the plate screws, retaining traces of original colour-hardening, 14 5/8in. tiger-stripe figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, steel pistolgrip-cap and steel buttplate, the fore-end with Anson push rod release catch and horn finial, weight 7lb. 15oz., in its leather case, relined in green baize but retaining original Holland & Holland trade label and charges label for Rifleite powder and 'our special brass case with our special nickel covered hollow pointed bullet', the case lid exterior marked 'G.F.M'


Provenance: The Lot is supplied with an extensive article written about the rifle and its recent history as well as its original provenance. According to the article, Holland & Holland kindly confirmed that the rifle was made for a 'Mr Murphy, bolted in front, Long lock pieces, Anson snap fore-end, 28in. barrel'.
Further research in collaboration with esteemed author and historian, Donald Dallas, has determined that 'G.F.M' will relate to George Fitzgerald Murphy of The Grange, Dunsany, County Meath, Ireland
