circa 1868, with possible replacement 33 1/4in. octagonal barrel, provision for a dove-tailed fore-sight (sight absent), standing notch rear-sight, rounded falling-block receiver, the breech with dual ignition (percussion parts removed and absent), the left side of receiver marked 'MERRIMACK ARMS & MFG. CO. NEWBURY PORT MASS' over 'BALLARD'S PATENT NOV. 5 1861' (all rubbed), central hammer, the top-tang later fitted with a folding peep-sight, restocked in the Swiss schuetzen style and fitted with a mushroom-headed palm-rest
