A FINE CASED .450 TRANTER'S PATENT ARMY REVOLVER WITH EIGHT INCH BARREL, RETAILED BY VENABLES, OXFORD, serial no. 59893,
circa 1880, the blued octagonal barrel signed on the top-flat 'J. VENABLES & SON ST ALDATES OXFORD', engraved band at muzzle and applied fore-sight, borderline engraved blued solid frame with swing-out 'long pear-shaped' ejector, colour hardened six-shot cylinder with raised moulded band to rear for the locking notches, brushed bright hammer and trigger, chequered walnut semi saw-handled grip with blued shallow domed butt-cap and guarded trigger, the whole retaining much original finish and colour throughout and in its walnut storage case with burr veneered lid, a circular gilt brass escutcheon to the lid centre bearing and enamelled badge of crossed rifles on a crowned shield over a banner initialled 'B.M.R.C.' (losses to enamel), the interior lined and compartmented in blue baize, the inside of lid bearing a white metal plaque engraved 'MAJOR F. MAURICE, 1872, 104TH BENGAL LANCERS' (probably added later) and containing a bullet tray, turn-screw and cleaning rod
