A CASED 40-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE SIGNED G. WEST, serial no. 1032,
circa 1861, with well rebrowned 30 3/4in. damascus barrels, raised flat top-rib signed 'G. WEST, MARKET PLACE RETFORD', blued fore-sight and twin folding leaf with standing notch rear-sight, colour hardened breech-blocks with platinum plugs, the rib-end at breech engraved with the head of a lion, fully engraved top-tang, colour hardened scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'G. WEST' and with bolted safes forward of the engraved drum-based hammers, the left lock further engraved with a standing tiger, the right with a lion, highly figured chequered walnut half-stock with raised carved cheek-piece, a patchbox to the right side engraved with a scene of a stag and hunting dog and with scroll engraved hinge, blued furniture including chequered spur to the lower tang, ebony ramrod and eyelets for sling, much original finish remaining except where noted and in its maker's walnut case lined and compartmented in blue baize and including a small number of period accessories
Provenance: George West traded in Retford, Nottinghamshire between 1862-64 having previously traded in Louth, Lincolnshire from 1848. Stylistically, this rifle bears many similarities to rifles produced by Purdey, although a direct link has not been established
