A CASED EARLY 16-BORE PERCUSSION RIVIERE PATENT DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 10,
circa 1825-30, with 30in. browned laminated barrels signed 'RIVIERE LONDON' on the rib, colour hardened breeches each with single inlaid platinum line and pierced platinum plug engraved with a rosette, the rib between engraved with a feathered vase, one-piece standing breech and action cover engraved with broad borders and chiselled foliage, a standing figure of a conquistador wearing a morion and holding a halberd in one hand a shield in the other marked 'RIVIERE PATENT 10' with a mail coat hanging in the background, well refinished walnut half-stock with chequered grip, engraved iron mounts including flat-fronted trigger-guard engraved with stylised acanthus leaves inhabited by a feathered serpent, trigger-plate with broad finial engraved with a stylised native chieftain flanked by two supporters and butt-plate engraved with a figure of a contemporary hunter cradling a gun and drinking from a flask to the top-spur, white metal barrel-key escutcheons, and original brass-mounted ramrod with worm, London proof marks, in its blue velvet-lined mahogany guncase with parchment maker's label inside lid and including a shot-flask, oil-bottle, nipple-key and turn-screw
