AN EARLY CASED 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 734,
for 1824, with browned laminated 28in. barrels, elevated top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY, PRINCES STREET LEICESTER SQUARE LONDON', bead fore-sight, a lion's mask engraved to the rib-end at breech, platinum line and vented plugs, London proofs to the underside and 'CL' for Charles Lancaster barrel maker's mark, border and acanthus scroll engraved top-tang (traces of colour), flat bar-action locks with border and acanthus scroll engraving further inhabited by feathered serpents, 'PURDEY' signature forward of the engraved hammers (noses chipped), grip-safe engraved and marked 'PATENT' with external intercepting safety sears marked 'PURDEY', walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture and brass mounted ebony ramrod, strong traces of finish, in a period oak casing lined and compartmented in green baize (mothing to lid lining), parchment re-applied Purdey trade label (holed), two period leather shot-flasks, a cap-tin, powder measure, nipple-key, wad-punch and three-piece cleaning rod


Provenance: According to Patrick Unsworth's book 'The Early Purdeys', this shotgun was made for a Mr Bradshaw in 1824 with 30in. barrels and patent safe. At the time of writing it was the 30th oldest Purdey known
