JOSEPH LANG, LONDON
AN OUTSTANDING CASED 6-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED FOWLING PIECE OR LIVE PIGEON GUN, serial no. 2602,
completed in 1865, with browned 36in. damascus barrels, the top-rib signed 'J. LANG, COCKSPUR STREET, LONDON', bead fore-sight, colour hardened breech-blocks with engraved rib-end, engraved band and platinum plugs, fully scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved colour hardened locks signed along the bars 'J. LANG', scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammers, chequered walnut half-stock, the wrist with an engraved escutcheon featuring a standing figure holding a corn-flail aloft below the motto 'Now Thus', iron furniture, the trigger guard bow with a scene of capercaillie and no provision for ramrod, retaining much period finish and colour and in its maker's oak case, lined and compartmented in green baize and including a flask, shot flask, two nipple-keys and an oil-bottle

Provenance: According to the Lang ledger, this shotgun was ordered by a Mr Norris as a 'fowler' on 19 January 1861 and completed on 22nd March 1865. The escutcheon engraving has been identified as belonging to Trafford of Trafford Park, Lancashire. It is possible that this shotgun, whilst ordered for fowling, had the specifications changed to suit live pigeon as it retains a ramrod catch at muzzle
