JAMES PURDEY, LONDON 
 A FINE CASED PAIR OF 46-BORE PERCUSSION RIFLED TARGET PISTOLS, serial no. 1622 & 1623, 
 for 1829, with browned slightly swamped 10 1/4in octagonal barrels, the top-flats signed 'I. PURDEY No. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON' (mild frosting over addresses), both barrels also bearing Irish registration number EC-1273, dove-tailed bead fore-sights, standing notch rear-sights to the top of the colour hardened breech-blocks, also numbered for the pair, platinum line and vented plugs, fully engraved top-tangs also bearing the pair number, borderline and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY', bolted safes behind the engraved dolphin headed hammers, walnut half-stocks with swept fully chequered grips and fitted with engraved iron caps, engraved escutcheons to wrists, single set triggers, engraved fore-end caps and no provision for ramrods, strong amount of finish and colour, in their maker's mahogany case lined and compartmented in green baize, parchment trade label inside lid and with a full suite of accessories including loading mallet, cleaning rod, powder flask, wad punch, cap tin, oil bottle and mould  
  
 Provenance: These pistols were completed in March 1829 and then apparently resold on 29th October of the same year to a Mr Oliver for £20 (against the part exchange of his air rifle). The ledgers describe them as 'Best Finished' with 12-groove barrels. The escutcheons feature an arm with mailed glove clasping a sprig
