T.J. MORTIMER, LONDON
A CASED PAIR OF 22-BORE PERCUSSION DUELLING PISTOLS, serial no. 5479,
circa 1825-30, 10 1/4in. octagonal twist sighted barrels (one with older rebrowned finish, the other struck off) each signed 'T.J. MORTIMER. MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY. LONDON' towards the breech, case-hardened patent breeches each engraved with a spray of foliage and with pierced platinum plug, scroll engraved tangs and bolted locks (one bolt incomplete) retaining traces of faded case-hardened finish, the locks each signed 'T.J. MORTIMER / ST. JAMES'S ST.', figured walnut half-stocks, chequered butts, blued mounts including spurred scroll engraved trigger-guards, shaped silver escutcheons, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons and fore-end caps, and original brass-mounted ramrods each with worm (some scattered surface corrosion throughout especially to each hammer and breech around the nipple), London proof marks, in original dark green velvet lined mahogany case with accessories including Bartram flask, two japanned Joyce's percussion cap tins, bullet mould and nipple wrench, the lid with shaped brass escutcheon incorporating a flush-fitting carrying handle (key-hole escutcheon missing, the lid holed near the escutcheon).
Other Notes: Thomas Jackson Mortimer (1781-1833) ran his own business on St. James's Street between 1818 until his death. The business moved premises twice during this period, starting at No. 21 he moved to No. 38 in 1822 and to No. 34 in 1824. He was made Gunsmith-in-Ordinary to George IV in 1822.
