30in. nitro reproved damascus barrels, rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 73 ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', wall thicknesses around 18, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl choke in both, Jones patent rotary-underlever, carved percussion fences, rebounding back-action locks, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 1/8in. highly-figured stock including steel buttplate, weight 6lb. 11oz., in its leather case with some accessories.
The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in March 1879 for Major The Hon. C.C. Winn, 4th Rifle Brigade. At the same time it is recorded that Major Winn ordered a .500 Express rifle.

Provenance: Major The Hon. Charles Cavendish Winn, son of Rowland Winn, of Nostell, Yorkshire, was born 27th September 1858. He took part in the Tochi Valley Expedition 1897 and was posthumously awarded the Indian General Service Medal and bar (1895 - 1902) for the Campaign on the Punjab Frontier 1897-8. His name is listed on a Rifle Brigade memorial at Rawalpindi and his grave is at Ambala. It was here that he died, aged 39 following an accident whilst playing polo.
