A 13-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED SKELETON-STOCKED FLINTLOCK SPORTING COVERT GUN,
late 18th century, with 25in. two-stage octagonal to round swamped twist barrel signed 'NEWTON. GRANTHAM' towards the breech, silver fore-sight, gold-lined touch-hole, border and scroll engraved grooved tang, flat bevelled border engraved bolted lock (cock repaired) with stepped tail and signed 'NEWTON', figured walnut full stock carved in low relief with a shell behind the barrel-tang and with two-piece fore-end and skeletal butt (butt repaired), border and scroll engraved iron mounts including solid side-plate and trigger-guard with mounting block for a sling mount, shaped iron escutcheon, and iron-capped ramrod (iron parts with some surface corrosion and wear to engraving), Birmingham private proof mark, barrelsmith's mark of William Newton.
