A GEORGIAN PRESENTATION SWORD,
dated '1804', with 30 3/4in. fullered single-edged blade double-edged towards the point signed 'J.J. RUNKEL. SOLINGEN' on the back-edge, the blade etched on each side with foliage, the Royal Arms, a figure of Britannia, indistinct London maker's details, a figure of Justice, a Classical trophy of arms, 'WARRANTED' and the presentation inscription 'THE GIFT OF THE WERN DIVISION OF SHROPSHIRE VOLUNTEERS, TO LIEUTENANT AND ADJUTANT SAML. M. LAURENCE FOR HIS ABLE MILITARY SERVICE AND GREAT ATTENTION TOWARDS THEM. 10 DECR. 1804' (some wear to etching, blade discoloured with some scattered patches of pitting), stirrup hilt with short rear quillon, two down-turned shell-guards, knuckle-guard and one-piece pommel and grip-strap all with applied silver decoration involving beadwork, faceted radiating lines and running foliage all against a gilt ground (gilding rubbed around grip), and later wooden grip inlaid with silver wire and dots (some loss, possibly done in India), in brass-mounted black leather scabbard (leather weak, some flaking), with two suspension rings.
