A FINE 8-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED HAMMERGUN, serial no. 8498,
32 5/8in. nitro reproved damascus barrels, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', Jones patent rotary-underlever, carved percussion fences, non-rebounding floating locks, border engraving, retaining some colour-hardened finish, 14 5/8in. figured stock including 2in. wooden extension (inked to match) and horn buttplate, weight 11lb. 14oz. The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1871 for the Earl of Guildford.
Provenance: Dudley Francis North, 7th Earl of Guildford was born 14th July 1851 to Lord North and Charlotte Eden. He was schooled at Eton College before joing the Royal Horse Guards where he attained the rank of Lieutenant, he also held the honoury rank of Colonel with the Royal East Kent Yeomanry Cavalry. He had a short life and died, aged 34 in 1874.
