A CASED PAIR OF 28-BORE FLINTLOCK DUELLING PISTOLS,
circa 1785, with 9 1/2in. swamped rebrowned twist sighted barrels each signed 'THOMSON & CO. LONDON' on the full length sighting flat and with silver-inlaid line at the breech, gold-lined touch-holes, grooved tangs each engraved with scrollwork and a band of beadwork, border and foliate engraved flat bevelled locks each signed 'HARRISON & THOMSON' within a silver-inlaid oval and with stepped-tail and roller (one top-jaw with chipped edges), figured walnut full stocks each with flat-sided butt (each with repaired crack in ramrod channel and minor setting crack behind the rear ramrod-pipe, one pistol with repaired crack behind lock), engraved iron mounts including trigger-guards each retaining traces of original blued finish and with pineapple finial, and original iron-mounted ramrods each with powder-measure, one also incorporating a worm, London proof marks, in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories including a large brass-mounted red leather covered three-way pistol-flask and iron pincer-type bullet-mould, the exterior with brass carrying-handle.

Other Notes: Penelope Harrison and James Thomson, the widow and son-in-law of John (2) Harrison, are recorded as gunmakers at 18, Swan Street, Minories between 1779 and 1803 and were contractors to both Ordnance and the East India Company.
