Product Details

ELEY
AN IMPRESSIVE AND COMPREHENSIVE GLAZED CARTRIDGE DISPLAY BOARD,
measuring approx. 39in. x 45in., displaying a large variety of sporting and military shot and ball ammunition displayed in geometric patterns around a central roundel with Eley Ammunition plaque, including a range of paper cased shot cartridges from 4-bore to .410, with a quantity of paper-cased 12-bore cartridges marked 'T. STENSBY & CO.', with ball ammunition ranging from .22 to .600 Nitro express, the base of the display with varying shot sizes from dust to BB.

Provenance: This board would have been supplied to Thomas Stensby & Co. by Eley at some point during the first quarter of the 20th Century as a form of marketing. It is unusual for two reasons, firstly its impressive size, and the fact that it contains Stensby's branded cartridges as made by Eley.

Thomas Stensby took the reins of the company in 1883 when it had already been trading for at least seventy years under his family name. At this time the firm traded from Hanging Ditch in Manchester before moving to Withy Grove circa 1905 where they were to stay, albeit at two different addresses until 1955 when incorporation took place. The firm then moved to 33 Shudehill in 1980 before their final premises at no.1 Shudehill. This was in the heart of the city and the area that was to be so devastated by the I.R.A. bombing. Following this, much of the surrounding area was swept away in a re-development programme and 1 Shudehill was one of the few Georgian/Victorian buildings left in the vicinity.

The company has now sadly ceased trading, and so it is that we are able to offer this fine cartridge board. For details of the company name and goodwill, please see lot 143.
