26in. black powder only octagonal barrel (proof marks for 1921), top flat partially matted and with open sights and folding leaf sights for 50, 100 and 150 yards, with silver-inlaid sighting lines, bead foresight, side flats engraved 'WILLIAM EVANS. 63. PALL MALL. ST. JAMES'S. LONDON. .250 BORE.', non-selective ejector, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, carved teardrop fences, removable striker disc, fine border and bold acanthus scroll engraving, retaining virtually full original colour-hardening and much finish, 14 1/2in. boldly-figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, engraved and colour-hardened pistolgrip-cap, Hackett-style snap fastener fore-end with horn finial, weight 5lb. 10oz., in its original brass-cornered canvas and leather case with some accessories, the lid exterior marked 'CAPT. N.J. BENGOUGH'

Provenance: Captain N.J. Bengough was born into a landed family from Wheatenhurst, Gloucestershire. He served in the military wing of the Royal Flying Corps during the Great War and had attained the rank of Second Lieutenant by 1915. By the end of hostilities he was a Captain when he retired to the family estate which was later passed over to his son.
