Product Details

W.D.M. "KARAMOJO" BELL
A RARE FIRST EDITION COPY OF "WANDERINGS OF AN ELEPHANT HUNTER",
published 1923 at the London offices of Country Life Ltd., Bell's first book and a totally engaging read, original mustard quarter buckram on dun paper boards, title gilt to spine, linen patch title label to the upper board, frontispiece and 72 other plates, illustrations to the text, the whole with some moderate rubbing and occasional foxing, though holding firm overall.

Other Notes: Walter Dalrymple Maitland 'Karamojo' Bell is recorded as one of the greatest ivory hunters ever to have lived. He cheated death on many occasions on hunting expeditions to the most remote and inhospitable regions of Africa during a time when a good deal of it was relatively uncharted. He hunted in the Karamojo region of north east Uganda during the years 1902-1907 and this is how he acquired his nick-name. He was a great exponent of using relatively small-bore rifles against large game, and is most famously associated with the Rigby .275 bolt action rifle which he used to great effect at remarkably short ranges.
