A RARE LARGE NICKEL-SILVER 'COFFIN-HILTED' BOWIE KNIFE, MODEL 'DEATH TO ABOLITION'
mid 20th century, assembled from older parts, with 13in clip-point blade, false edged for 5 3/4in at point, the forte stamped 'F W JAMES', the blade etched with 'DEATH TO ABOLITION' and stamped with three 'Wostenholm' trademarks, scalloped back, nickel-silver cross-guard in the shape of human bones,and hollow nickel-silver 'coffin' hilt with applied silver 'coffin handles', applied shield containing the letters 'RIP', concealed trapdoor in the tip opening to reveal a 'pill-box' , the lid with an applied silver hang-mans noose (slight storage marks to blade,) TOGETHER WITH its original leather lined nickel-silver scabbard, the body engraved in imitation of fur, with applied mounts at each end and stud for frog at throat.
