Provenance: The vendor has kindly supplied us with the following information:
"These records provide an insight into the business problems facing Joseph Lang & son in the post WW1 era when Henry Webley, the managing director, spent months at a time in the South of France just prior to his death. After unsuccessful negotiations for the sale of the business first to Fortnum & Mason and then to Cogswell & Harrison, the directors refused an offer of £3,000 from Ogden Smith and Hussey. Joseph Lang & Son was purchased in 1925 by William Robson of Stephen Grant & Sons and the two firms amalgamated. During the 1930s and 1940s other famous gunmaking firms were purchased when attempts were made to expand into the American market through Abercrombie & Fitch and John Wanamaker Ltd. These minutes demonstrate the co-operation between the London gunmakers and the paternalistic approach adopted to employees."
