AN OTTOMAN KINJAL
dated for 1898, 16 1/4in spire-point blade with central medial ridge, the front etched with a balloon shaped panel containing a Russian two-headed eagle surrounded by scrolls and surmounted by spires with the date in a panel between, the reverse side of blade etched with a panel containing an unidentified inscription together with another in cyrillic translating as 'ZACCHARIAH', hilt of standard form with ivory scales (discoloured with minor losses) secured by two iron spherical headed, spirally fluted rivets and a central iron bar similarly decorated, TOGETHER WITH its original leather-bound scabbard with silver chape, nielloed with vines and a citadel (Mecca?) with a further unidentified inscription beneath, terminating in a ball finial (losses to leather covering, finial re-attached)
