A FINE CASED 12-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN, serial no. 6391
for 1814, converted from flintlock circa 1835, with 31in twist steel browned barrels numbered CL6462, top rib signed in script 'JOSEPH MANTON'S NEW IMPROVEMENTS BY HIS MAJESTY'S PATENT', platinum lined breech block and vents, long spiral engraved top-tang, flat bevelled lockplates signed 'JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON' with engraved borders, foliate panels, and open books on the stepped tails, scroll engraved dolphin head hammers, figured walnut half-stock with chequered wrist (two small inlet repairs in forearm), steel long-eared heel-plate, steel trigger guard engraved en-suite with the locks, pineapple finial, silver barrel-wedge escutcheons and ebony ramrod with tool end (the whole being an early refinish, possibly contemporary with the conversion), TOGETHER WITH a period mahogany, compartmented case lined in green baize (lid lining renewed) with provision for flask and other accessories, the end compartment containing a period nipple key/pricker combination tool
