A CONTINENTAL HUNTING HANGER
circa 1780, with 25in single edged blade (slight loss to tip), false edged for the last 7in, single wide fuller with back-edge groove, the fuller engraved with a naïve hound chasing a boar on the left hand side and a stag on the right, the ricasso etched with knot-work, musical and martial trophies, running vine engraved on the blade spine, large brass rococco shell guard with an eagle and a recumbant male in 17th century dress holding a scroll, 'S' shaped guard with relief decoration, brass-mounted hilt with a relief carved grip panel containing a man in armour, eagle head pommel (fixing hole for chain knuckle bow, missing), and renewed (in antiquity) leather grip, (blade with discolouration, brass-work polished with some loss to detail, no scabbard)
