AN ENGLISH 'MORTUARY' BASKET HILTED SWORD
circa 1640, with 35in single edged blade, false edged for 12in, re-profiled tip, four narrow fullers, two extending the full length, one for two thirds the remainder partial, three of which stamped 'SOHLINGEN' with each letter of the word interspersed with a 'O' flanked by stamped dots, the iron basket hilt face-plate carved with four sea-monsters and four human heads, the bars of the hilt engraved with fish and screwed to the ball pommel, ringed ivory grip (some staining to iron parts)
