Product Details

AN INTERESTING HOWDAH, PROBABLY THAI IN ORIGIN AND DATING TO EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY,
the overall dimensions 57 x 31 x 29in. approx., the yoke and framework of teak with applied gilt to filigree and wicker-work paneling, the fiddle rail with turned ivory uprights and shoulders, some evidence of historic repairs.

Other Notes: Thai howdahs, or 'yaeng changs', were made in many different qualities from those designed for commoners known as 'sapakhaps', to elaborate designs for royalty and dignitaries called 'phra thinang praphasthong'. Research would suggest that this howdah would have been built for a reasonably wealthy gentleman due to the ivory ornamentation. They were built in large numbers and used for daily transport as well as for hunting and military use.
