probably German and dated for 1662, with heavy, swamped iron 25in octagonal barrel, dovetailed blade foresight and fixed leaf rearsight, dated on the top-flat together with traces of dot-punched decoration, barrel makers mark of a 'C' co-joined with an 'I' surrounding a cross, traces of decoration at muzzle and breech, strongly curved and radiused 'banana' lock, makers mark of 'MLB' concealed within the frizzen-spring, French-style hammer, replacement frizzen, carved walnut full-stock with swollen butt, patch-box with wooden lid (later carving) to right hand side, raised cheek-piece to left hand side naively carved with the letters 'NV', later carving to front of comb iron heel plate (later screws), later horn inlays forming side nail escutcheons surrounded by later carving (one side-nail replaced), long sheet-iron trigger guard with fancy finial, scroll carved forend (tip replaced) and bordered ramrod channel, iron thimbles, replacement bone tipped ramrod (iron surfaces cleaned and stained with traces of pitting)
