A BRASS-MOUNTED TWO-TIER OAK AND LEATHER DOUBLE HAMMERGUN CASE,
suitable for 30in. barrels, lined with green baize, central brass lock (key missing), oak baize lined take-out tray, the interior lid with a 'CHAs. LANCASTER' trade label, the take out tray with a 'CHARGES LABEL' for serial no. 5622-23, the exterior lid with an escutcheon 'CRATHORNE YARM' engraved and embossed J. LIONEL DUGDALE., original straps, handle partially detached.
Provenance: James Lionel Dugdale, born 1862 into a landed family, laid the foundation stone of Crathorne Hall in 1903. When completed in 1906 it was the largest country house built during the Edwardian era with a total of 115 rooms.
Dugdale's son, Thomas, was to become the 1st Baron Crathorne and fought in both world wars. Indeed, his coming-of-age party had to be delayed due to the fact that he was still at the front.
