A 12-BORE 1866 PATENT ROTARY THUMBLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 1818,
30 5/8in. nitro reproved barrels (in 2014), rib engraved '1' and 'W.R. PAPE. NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE. WINNER OF THE LONDON GUN TRIALS IN 1858. 1859 & 1866', 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and true cyl. choke, right wall thickness below recommended minimum, some pits, action with carved serpentine fences (one damaged), top tang engraved '1', rebounding sidelocks with carved base-fire type hammers with spurs of hare's-ear form, action face with curved extractor slot (operates extractor on opening), Pape patent thumblever, patent no. 1504 of 1866, best border and bold scroll engraving (action worn), 14 5/8in. well-figured stock (small cracks at hand) with reblued steel heel and toe plates, weight 7lb.

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed as No. 1 of a pair, for a Mr Rudley of Blaydon and supplied to him on the 22nd July, 1870. The gun was supplied to Pape by the gunmaker Wilkinson.
