A CASED 16-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 671,
circa 1825, with rebrowned, un-numbered 29 1/2in. barrels, the top-rib signed 'JAMES PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON' (refreshed), further refreshed scroll engraving at the breech-end, breech-blocks with platinum vents (traces of colour), curved, flat bar-action locks numbered '671' signed 'PURDEY' and engraved with mythical serpents, foliage and sun-bursts, both locks with inlet repairs from removal of safety-catches, hammers engraved with mythical serpents and foliage (left hand hammer with repair to nose and replacement screw), walnut half-stock, chequered at the wrist with rectangular escutcheon engraved 'C.B. WALE GIFT OF COL. MAHON', iron heel-plate with long spur, large trigger-guard (serial number rubbed on tang) and period, possibly original ramrod, woodwork re-finished TOGETHER WITH a period re-lined oak case, compartmented and lined in red baize (original trade label re-applied) and including a period flask, cap-tin and oil bottle
Provenance: We are kindly informed by the makers that this shotgun was completed circa 1823 with 30in. barrels for a Mr. Fielding.
