AN EXTREMELY FINE AND RARE CASED 4-BORE TUBELOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED FOWLING PIECE, serial no. 940,
circa 1840, with browned, tapering round 45in. twist-steel barrel, the short sighting flat at breech engraved with 'CHARLES LANCASTER 151 NEW BOND ST. LONDON', bead fore-sight, colour-hardened hooked stepped breech-block with silver poincon embossed with 'CHARLES LANCASTER LONDON', platinum line, top-tang engraved with borders, shells, scrolls and a waterfowl afloat , slightly curved border and scroll engraved lockplate signed 'C. LANCASTER PATENT', together with a gamescene of waterfowl, scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammer with patent tubelock nose, scroll-shaped flash-guard, figured, chequered walnut pistol-grip half-stock, iron pommel-cap, vacant rectangular escutcheon to wrist, iron long-spurred heel-plate engraved with a hunting dog, further waterfowl engraved to trigger-guard bow, pineapple finial, two blued steel take-down wedges with rectangular silver escutcheons, horn fore-end tip and original brass-mounted ramrod (much colour throughout) TOGETHER WITH its original oak transit case, compartmented and lined in green baize, and including a number of contemporary, possibly original accessories including a large copper-bodied basket-weave flask, a large leather shot flask, an additional loading rod and a quantity of original percussion tubes
