A CASED 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 3832,
for 1844, with rebrowned damascus 30in. barrels, scroll engraving at the breech-end, breech-blocks with platinum vents and lines, curved, flat bar-action border and scroll engraved locks signed 'PURDEY' (rubbed and brushed bright), dolphin headed hammers engraved with scrolls, highly figured walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece, re-chequered at the wrist with vacant oval silver escutcheon, scroll engraved iron heel-plate with long spur, large trigger-guard, ramrod throat a possible replacement and original ramrod (tip replaced), exposed iron surface brushed with loss to detail, woodwork re-finished, TOGETHER WITH a period re-lined walnut case, compartmented and lined in green baize, possible reproduction trade label and brass ring-handle to lid
Provenance: We are kindly informed by the makers that this shotgun was completed as no.2 of a pair with 30in. barrels for Sir N. Codrington.
Literature: Mr L. Patrick Unsworth's book 'The Early Purdeys' lists gun no. 3832 as being one of a pair and being sold on 17th February 1844
