mid-Victorian, possibly of South American origin, with deep clip-point 7in. blade, false edged for the last 2 1/2in., silver 'S' shaped cross-guard with swollen finials, substantial silver framed hilt with marine ivory 'beaked' scales (large chip to right hand side at pommel), rope-carved borders and three large rivets bound with silver wire TOGETHER WITH its original plain silver scabbard engraved to the front 'A. P. CHARLESTON 1859' over a masonic compass and set-square device, some staining throughout
