J. PURDEY
AN UNUSUAL EARLY 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 7852,
No.2, 30in. black powder only etched damascus barrels by Leopold Bernard, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, carved percussion fences, rebounding floating back-action locks with dolphin hammers, fine border and scroll engraving, reblued triggerguard, 14 1/2in. figured stock (worn, with insert at comb), weight 6lb. 15oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed as No.2 of a pair for Leslie Slingsby in 1868.
The records list the barrels as being 30in., but no further information is noted. It is possible that the Leopold Bernard barrels are original, they are dated 1868 and carry contemporary London proof marks, but this cannot be confirmed absolutely.
