A FINE CASED 15-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 428,
circa 1855, with browned, triple stage 30 1/4in. twist-steel barrel, nickel-bead fore-sight, the top flat at breech signed 'ROSS, EDINBURGH', scroll-engraved colour-hardened breech-block with platinum line and plug, long shell and scroll engraved top-tang, border and game-scene engraved back-action isolated colour-hardened lock signed 'ROSS', the game scene featuring one running stag and one at rest, scroll engraved dolphin head hammer, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, blued heel-plate with engraved border to the edge and around the fixing screws, blue floral scroll engraved trigger-guard and tang, the bow with an engraved game-scene of pheasants in a woodland setting (retaining its William Keith Neal collection medallion, reference number C163), silver take-down wedge escutcheons and fore-end tip, blued ramrod throat, under-rib with original ramrod, the whole in a remarkable state of preservation and retaining most of its original finish, TOGETHER WITH its original walnut case compartmented and lined in green baize and containing a number of period accessories including a leather bodied shot-flask with nickel mounts by 'HAWKSLEY', a nickel mounted leather covered powder flask by 'SYKES', an oil bottle, wad-punch and a nipple-key with pricker
