A POWELL 1864 PATENT 16-BORE BAR-IN-WOOD LIFT-UP TOPLEVER ROTATING SINGLE BOLT SNAP-ACTION HAMMERGUN, serial no. 4954,
28in. black powder reproved damascus barrels, rib engraved 'WILLIAM POWELL & SON 13. CARR'S LANE BIRMINGHAM.', 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. in both, incorporating William Powell patent lift-up toplever, patent no. 1163 of 7th May 1864, use number 1299, bar-in-wood, carved serpentine fences with Powell patent gold-inlaid 'Loaded' indicators, patent no. 1055 of 1869, rebounding sidelocks with swept hammers of hare's-ear form, fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral borders, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 1/4in. well-figured stock including steel buttplate, weight 6lb. 5oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was ordered on the 8th August, 1872 by a J. Prescott, Esq.
