25in. shortened black powder damascus barrels, rib engraved 'WILLIAM POWELL & SON 13. CARR'S LANE BIRMINGHAM.' and 'C', 2 1/2in. chambers, true cyl. in both, incorporating William Powell patent lift-up toplever, patent no. 1163 of 7th May 1864, use number 1919, bar-in-wood, fluted teardrop fences with Powell patent gold-inlaid 'Loaded' indicators, patent no. 1055 of 1869, rebounding sidelocks with swept hammers of hare's-ear form, fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral borders, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 1/2in. well-figured stock including horn buttplate, fore-end with Deeley & Edge patent release, horn finial and with insert repair, weight 6lb. 5oz., in its 'London Pattern' lightweight leather case with provision for both sets of barrels
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was ordered on December 23rd 1875 by J. W. Gladstone Esq., with 28in. damascus barrels and a second set of 30in. 'C' barrels.
Other Notes: A photocopy of the maker's ledger with the details of this gun is supplied with the Lot.
The original 28in. barrels (out of proof) can be made available to the buyer of the Lot for sleeving purposes, but will only be released cut in the approved manner as per Proof House guidelines
